About

By now you probably have read how this site got started so I’d like to tell you a little something about me and woodcarving. How did it all get started.. read on.

Well, to age myself it may have started after countless hours of “mumbly peg”  and trying to keep my pocket knife sharp. For you  “youngsters “ out there this was a game played with knives. If you played in today’s society they would lock you up!! Somehow we all survived!

About 10 years ago I signed up for a Community Education class ( a great place to learn) on woodcarving This class was taught by a local carver, Bill Wolfe, a friend of mine to this day. About 20 minutes into  class I cut my self  really good!! (Yes you can cut yourself so you will see safety tips and band aid ratings  and advice consistently offered! ) Well after I was patched up I had fun and completed the class. As the class ended Bill was very worried if I was coming back next week. I had so much fun I knew I would but I couldn’t convince Bill. Bill told me many, many of his students never came back after the first “good” cut.  I laughed and explained to Bill that after many years of cuts playing football, hockey, basketball and baseball I just felt like I was back home!!

After the initial class I went on to take classes with another local carver Dick Jacobs. Dick really helped developed my skills and was very patient in his help. Through Dick’s yelling, screaming (just kidding)  and encouragement  my skills continued to improve. Dick and I and few others still carve together and have a lot of fun!

I also took many classes with nationally known carvers. The list would be long but I have to at least thank Floyd Rhadigan, “Ol Don” Burgdorf and Cleve Taylor.

Carving for me has always been a release and relaxation from my busy Corporate and coaching   career. Carving took me to a different place to lose track of time.  Yes, I’m guilty. I’m a carving nut. Pegged by some as the “Woodologist”–  but that’s a separate story.

I don’t get to carve  as much as I would like to but I enjoy carving Santas, caricatures , wood spirits and a “whatever” toss in!

I also enjoy helping people sooooo when you combine it all –  you have this site.  Please enjoy it, have fun and let me know if I can help you in any way!!!
